A Strategy Offsite Is Not Technology Alignment
Some of us have sat through offsites that “aligned” IT to a goal nobody wrote down. I still treat a strategy retreat as a confession: the software request does not exist.
I have been invited to strategy offsites that had no software request. Different year. Same flip chart: “Let’s get aligned,” which means nobody wrote the week down and the mountainside was easier.
A retreat photographs well. You leave with pillars, a theme, and a promise to “connect technology to the business.” You do not leave with a story a stranger can retell. I have watched forty people spend two days discovering that the submitter still emails a spreadsheet every Friday. That sentence should have been the offsite.
A flip chart is not a decision
If the person closest to the work cannot write what happens today, who is stuck, and what better looks like, you do not have alignment. You have a rumor with a facilitator. I have never seen an offsite invent those three facts. I have seen offsites bury them under a slide titled Strategic Initiatives.
Do not book the retreat to extract the paragraph. Send the two missing answers back. How to align technology with business goals is blunt about this: the goal lives on the request, or it does not live.
Why Strategy Offsites Fail to Align Business and IT Priorities
Use software project intake so the outcome exists before anyone books a facilitator. The submitter is the operations lead, the clerk, the person who still runs the workaround. A sponsor is optional. A written week is not.
One offsite that produced a client-experience pillar and no owner for the Friday export. We spent the quarter building the pillar. The export is still there. That is not a cute story. It is the default.
Fund the request that still carries the goal
When the page is understandable, a meeting can decide a yes, a no, or a not yet. That meeting is short because the argument is on the record. The software delivery management features path is review, questions, estimate, decide. None of those need a lodge if the first page already exists.
The complete repair is how to fix a broken business project intake process. This page keeps the offsite version separate: a strategic noun is still not a submitted request.
If you need an offsite to find the goal, you scheduled the wrong event. Cancel it. Ask for the paragraph. I have canceled more retreats than I have regretted.
